‘Women’s gold’ or shea tree represents an additional source of income for women in Burkina Faso collecting the shea fruit during the rainy season. Collectors working with OLVEA Burkina Faso, formally called Burkarina, provide the kernels to the company who later produces shea butter and sells it to OLVEA Vegetable Oils, a French supplier of Vegetable oils for the cosmetic industry since 1929.
Olvea Burkina Faso has an annual trituration capacity of approximately 3,000 tonnes of shea kernels, employing 25 people and supporting over 20,000 women producers. The department of Quality and Supply Chain at OLVEA Burkina Faso, guarantees the quality control of the product as well as the fair prices offered to the women producers, which according to the producers are higher than the market price. Organised in cooperatives local producers receive training in processing practices to meet the market requirements and ensure traceability.
The major challenge the company faces is the sustainable use and preservation of the shea tree, for this OLVEA Burkina Faso is working closely with the cooperative of collectors and producers, the Ministry of Sustainable Development and NGOs. Through its UEBT membership, the company commits to strengthen its positive environmental and social impact, as well as set long-term sustainable development objectives and further engage with women cooperatives in its supply chain.
