Research shows growing number of patents in cosmetics

Recent research for the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT) shows that natural ingredients account for a major proportion of the escalating patent activity in cosmetics and perfumes. Natural ingredients account for 49% of patent activity in cosmetics, and a conservative estimate is that 34% of patent activity in the sector refers to plant-based ingredients and extracts.  There is also evidence of increasing use of defensive patenting strategies.  In view of growing awareness of biodiversity and the imminent international regime on access and benefit sharing, these trends highlight the need for companies in these sectors to consider the links between patents, biodiversity and equitable sharing of benefits.
